The
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali
(OON), has described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as a
key to national development, saying that the scheme has justified the
resources and efforts put into it by the Federal Government.
Prof. Ambali made this observation last
Wednesday (March 4, 2015) when he received the NYSC Director of Press
and Public Affairs, Mrs. Bosede Aderibigbe, in his office.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented
by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. (Mrs.) N. Y. S. Ijaiya,
noted that the NYSC programme has continued to justify its existence by
remaining relevant to national life.
Prof. Ambali stressed the need for
graduates of different backgrounds to mix, saying that the NYSC has
provided the platform for such interaction. “The nation will become
better for it”, he noted.
On the corps members serving in the
University, the Vice-Chancellor said that the University was satisfied
with the corps members posted to the institution, adding that the corps
members have contributed immensely to the development of the
institution. “We look forward to having more corps members posted to the
University”, he said.
Prof. Ambali also promised to look into the stipends paid to corps members in the institution with a view to reviewing it.
He then thanked the NYSC Director for
her visit to the University on a sensitisation mission for the final
year students on the NYSC mobilization processes.
Earlier in her remarks, the NYSC
Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mrs. Aderibigbe, said that the
NYSC Headquarters had heard so much about the good work the management
of the University of Ilorin was doing to place the institution at the
fore front of tertiary institutions in the country. She also commended
the University for its stable academic calendar.
Mrs. Aderibigbe, who is an alumnus of
the University, explained that she was in the institution to brief
prospective graduates of the University on the mobilisation exercise.
She disclosed that the orientation for the next batch of corps members
would commence nationwide on May 5, 2015 while another one has been
slated for October.
The NYSC Director commended the
University on its endeavours to absorb some of the corps members posted
to serve in the institution. She also praised the University's Desk
Officer in charge of the NYSC scheme, Mrs. K. W. Sallee, the Deputy
Registrar, Student Affairs, for her prompt treatment of enquiries from
the NYSC National Headquarters.
A major highlight of the courtesy visit
was the presentation of souvenirs to the NYSC official by the Registrar,
Mr. E. D. Obafemi, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Council
Office, Mrs. M. A. Oladosu.
The NYSC Director was accompanied by Mr.
M. A. Amusa, Kwara State NYSC Coordinator; Olusoji O. Olanike,
Assistant Director; E. U. Essiet, Assistant Director; Fayomi O.
Oluwaseun, ICT Desk Officer, and A. O. Morakinyo, Kwara NYSC P.R.O.
