Students donate 1,025 coloring books to hospital

Three Springboro Junior High School students recently donated 1,025 coloring books and crayon boxes to Dayton Children’s Hospital, which goes through 10,000 coloring books and crayons every year.
“At the donation event, we gave a coloring book to a little girl,” said Noah Young, 14, who organized the donations with the help of his friends, Josh Wang and Michael Joo. “She was so happy when we gave it to her. It was a great feeling.”

The students, who made their donation at Dayton Children’s Urgent Care in Springboro, began with a goal of 500 coloring books. In just two weeks, the students more than doubled their goal. About 5,000 coloring books are purchased by Dayton Children’s Hospital each year and about 5,000 are donated.
“We were going to start with hardcover books, but found out there was a much higher need for coloring books,” said Young.
The students approached Donut Haus Bakery, Minds in Motion and Bright Beginnings preschools, Dennis Elementary School, and Clearcreek Elementary School asking for donations in Springboro.
The biggest contribution was made from Donut Haus Bakery with almost 500 total coloring books. Owner Mike Hemmert matched the over 200 coloring books and crayon boxes that were dropped off at his location.
“Donut Haus is already pretty active in the community. We help with Springboro Police Department’s Operation Santa and donating to Franklin and Springboro Food Pantries,” Hemmert said. “When Noah, Michael, and Josh approached me and asked me if they could use the business to get donations, I knew that our customers would definitely participate. We have several hundred people come into the business every day.”
“We are considering continuing to do a service project every year…It was a fantastic experience and I feel very happy that kids are going to be getting these coloring books when they really needed it.” said Young.
Young, Wang, and Joo made the donation as part of an exit project for the Springboro Junior High chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The society helps students to improve in areas of “character, scholarship, leadership, and service.”
