“We Will Justify Our Electoral Victory” – Oladele, APC Rep–Elect

Contrary to what the Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu said that President Goodluck Jonathan’s failure at the polls was the price he had to pay for reneging on his alleged agreement with the North to serve for only one term, an All Progressive Congress (APC) House of Representatives- elect and a former chief of staff to the Executive Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Kayode Oladele has stated that “the defeat of the outgoing President was because of the mass rejection of the PDP by teeming majority of Nigerians after several years of broken promises, arrogance of power and purposeless leadership which made the PDP part of the problems instead of a solution. In a nutshell, there was a wide disconnect between the people and the President’s party. Hence, when the electorates were confronted with a credible alternative, they embraced change and chose wisely”.

Professor Tekena Nitonye Tamuno: The Sacred Canopy of Our Rainbow Coalition- A Tribute By Toyin Falola

"He who exalts himself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted" (Matthew 23:12) "Blessed are the meek" (Matthew 5: 5)
Professor Tekena Tamuno (1932-2015), a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, joined his ancestors on Saturday, April 11, 2015. He once used the metaphor of the “mother banana” and the “banana family” to illustrate the dynamics of the continuum and how our universe functions: that as the mother banana dies, it gives birth to a new one! In essence, Professor Tamuno was this “mother banana,” forever green, immortal, and transcendental.

In 1997, I was a researcher and translator at the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA), a French government-owned research funder in the humanities and social sciences based at the University of Ibadan. One of our research streams was entitled, "Youth, Street Culture, and Urban Violence in Africa". For three years, more than fifty commissioned African and Western scholars worked on the theme, using case studies from Africa's capital cities. We decided to end that research cycle with a conference on the theme in Abidjan, Cote-d'Ivoire.

Nigeria’s Curious Security Services By Sonala Olumhense

My dear reader, please look very closely at this picture.  I am going to tell you about it.
I saved a lot of pictures from Nigeria’s historic elections of March and April 2015; most in memorable words, several of them in pictures.  This was one of them.
Before I discuss this picture, I want to tell you about another one, which appeared…in laughter.  It was of Nigeria’s then presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari at an interview in London when he visited to give a speech in Chatham House.  As you might recall, that was a time that many of his critics were questioning his health.

Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, may now finance party
Fresh woes may be on the way for President Goodluck Jonathan following his ill fated re-election bid.
Most of the governors elected on the platform of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are understood to be plotting to sideline him in their plan to rebuild the party.
The governors, outgoing and surviving, want to chart a new course for the party with them in the driving seat.
But they are also disposed to bringing in as many of those frustrated out by President Jonathan as possible, sources familiar with the development told The Nation in Abuja yesterday.
Barring any alteration of their plan, the governors are expected to go full blast from May 29, hijacking the party’s affairs from President Jonathan whose tenure terminates on that day.

The Xenophobia Syndrome - by Charly Boy

Here's Charly Boy's take on the Xenophobic attacks happening in South Africa currently. Read below
I am not feeling good today. Perhaps I got up on the wrong side of the bed. But the bad news from my telephone conversation with my granddaughter who is an undergraduate in Mauritius last week could be a factor. She expressed her deep concerns regarding safety in her country of study, highlighting strings of attacks on foreigners.I have been most worried about the too much bickering and guarding of territory stories making the rounds. It appears Xenophobia is becoming the mass ideology of the century.

Car babes banned? China wants eyes on cars not models at auto show

A model poses next to a Subaru BRZ racing car on media day at the Shanghai auto show in 2013. This year scantily clad models are banned.
When China's biggest auto show opens in Shanghai this week, the only models on display will be the ones with four wheels.
Gone, show organizers hope, will be the scantily-clad "car babes" that in previous years have posed provocatively on car hoods and sashayed through the aisles to draw crowds to the 9-day event.
The focus, instead, will be the latest offerings from an array of global car manufacturers, which -- models or not -- are pulling out all the stops to compete for Chinese customers in what since 2009 has been the world's largest car market.

It's not every day that a CEO voluntarily slashes his salary by 90% after reading an academic article.
Yet in the case of Dan Price, founder of Gravity Payments, that's exactly how it happened. After reading a study showing that for workers earning under $75,000 there's a strong connection between income and happiness, he made a decision. Within the next three years, he announced Monday, every employee at his company would earn at least $70,000. And he was going to shrink his million-dollar salary to make that happen.
