Bayero University Kano, BUK – 8,875 graduands were conferred with first Degrees over three days from Tuesday, 19th to Thursday, 21st May, 2015 across all the faculties at the staggered 31st Convocation ceremonies for 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic sessions.
Bayero University had for the first time conferred the title of
Professor Emeritus on five distinguished retired Professors of the
university; they are Professor Ibrahim H. Umar, Professor Dandatti
Abdulkadir, Professor Muhammad Sani Zahraddeen, Professor Emmanuel Ajayi
Olofin and Professor Muhammad Munzali Jibril, the Vice Chancellor,
Abubakar Adamu Rasheed has disclosed.
Speaking on Saturday, 23rd May, 2015 during the 31st
Convocation ceremony for award of Higher Degrees, at the Convocation
Arena, he said the university has also graduated 63 candidates with
First Class Honours out of 8,875 candidates who have been awarded
Bachelor’s degrees from 12 faculties while 5,049 graduated with higher
degrees and postgraduate diplomas out of which 80 grandaunts have been
awarded PhD degrees, 3,146 Master’s degrees and 1,824 Postgraduate
Diplomas.
Professor Rasheed said Bayero University has come of age, as no one
questions its standing as a leading teaching and research university in
Nigeria, saying the university which started with ten students in 1964
today has 32,000 registered students pursuing undergraduate and
postgraduate degree programmes.
He said all the degree programmes in the university have been
accredited by the National Universities Commission and other relevant
professional bodies, adding that the university had expanded programmes
in all fields and presently it had applied to the NUC for permission to
establish a Faculty of Pharmacy and School of Communication and Media
Studies with effect from the next academic session.
He said the University Management has established a number of
research centres to promote cutting edge research, noting that the
Centre for Dryland Agriculture, the Centre for
of Mass Communications, Dr. Balarabe Maikaba said the Hausa Service
of Voice of America that made the donation did so with the aim of
seeking collaboration with the department in providing the platform for
training of mass communication students.
He said 13 beneficiaries out of which 10 are students and along with 3
staff would participate in the initial training programme for 8 days
beginning from Saturday, 30th May to 7 th June, 2015, adding that Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi would present a Keynote address.
The three staff would after the training, train others.
Dr. Maikaba added that the department would formally write the
Vice-Chancellor to seek approval to enable it go into collaboration with
the Voice of America. He said incidentally the Head of the VOA Hausa
Service is an alumnus of Bayero University that might make the
collaboration effective and useful to both parties. The HOD was
accompanied by the BUK FM Station Manager, Alhaji Salisu Rabiu.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor represented by the Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Sadiq Isah Radda, thanked
the Hausa Service of the VOA for the gesture which he said would go a
long way to aid the training of mass communication students.
He said the management was proud of the department for attracting
such very important support and collaboration, and urged the department
to make the best use of the equipment.
The equipment includes, two 330 Independent Avenue SW and 10 ipons.
African Entrepreneurship Research and Training, the Centre for
Biotechnology Research, and the Centre for Qur’anic Studies are fully
operational and are enhancing the reputational capital of the
university.
The Vice Chancellor said the university was lucky to access sizable
funds, grants and allocations from TETFund, Needs Assessment and other
sources, which enabled the fruition of ambitious but carefully designed
plans to transform the university.
He commended the contributions of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi
II, the Governor of Kano State, Engineer Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso,
contributing bodies and individuals whose efforts helped the development
of the university.
