THE Benin Palace, on Friday, declared that the Benin monarch, Oba
Erediauwa, has not mandated any of his chiefs to speak on his behalf in
his choice of a presidential candidate in the March 28 election, saying
that the Oba does not have a preferred candidate among those aspiring to
rule the country...
The clarification was made at a media briefing held at the Benin palace, attended by chiefs, led by the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe.
A statement signed by the chiefs stated that it had become imperative for the palace to speak following statements by some palace chiefs that they had spoken on behalf of the Oba.
“As a result of these claims and the resulting controversies and counterclaims, all the Oba palace chiefs, led by the Iyase of Benin, have met and duly resolved that the Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba of Benin, has never mandated any of his chiefs to speak or make any political statement on his behalf, especially as to the choice of a political leader for favour in the forthcoming election,” the Benin Palace stated.
Another statement issued by the secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, on behalf of the Crown Prince, also cleared the air on the visit of the Benin Crown Prince, Eheneden Erediauwa, to President Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Villa last year. The statement described the visit as an act of recompense for the inability of the Oba of Benin to receive the president when he visited him at his palace.
